In the developing world health workers travel from hospitals to treat patients in remote areas disconnected from central clinics. FrontlineSMS:Medic developed a free, open-source software platform to enable “large-scale, two-way text messaging using only a laptop, a GSM modem, and inexpensive cell phones.” The technology revolution enables health care workers to provide services in developing countries. Suite101 spoke with Lucky Gunasekara, who shared the fledgling organization’s challenges and lessons learned.
Collaboration not Competition is Key to Non Profit Success
According to Gunasekara non profit success is largely tied to collaboration not competition. “Nonprofit resources are limited,” he explains. He goes on to say that relationships matter and one has to build bridges. “Better to invite everyone under your tent, and relinquish control of your system so that people of all walks can contribute as much or as little as they want, and feel a sense of ownership.”
